How does this letter-form communicate its location?
These signs are a strong characteristic of the city. Like I mentioned, in my mind, I instantly relate those to Thessaloniki and indicate an era long gone. Even their material suggests so because it's worn off and the colors are desaturated even gone in some spots. However, they were widely used during the 18th century till at least the '00s. There are countless signages like the ones above scattered all over the city so I picked some that I personally liked and selected those streets because such shops can be found all over them. My grandfather used to own such a shop, unfortunately, I can't find a picture of it since it's long gone but this typography kind of typography is heavily connected with the immigration period as a result of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922. The Greeks that survived fled Minor Asia's shores and many were established in the Greek mainland. Thessaloniki, became home to many of them, my grandparents involved, which tried to build a new life here and as a result, many of those small shops appeared in the scenery, some still operating till present.
