How does this letter-form communicate its location?
I noticed these signs at the local BMX outdoor track. The typeface used, was printed on what I think is coated wood which was then stuck to a wall situated at the main gate of the track. At a first glance I would say that a display font is being used as it is quite unique as a font and surely wouldn’t be ideal to be used in paragraphs of text. Blackman, N. (2022) explains that “A display font is a font that's designed for use at a large scale as opposed to fonts that are created for body text. Display fonts are designed to stand out, be easy to read, and catch the eye.” To further elaborate, You Tube’s video A Brief History of Display Fonts by Envato Tuts+ say that display fonts are used at large scale to convey a specific feeling, and the best display fonts can create an atmosphere in an instant. In this case, the font being used doesn’t really create a particular atmosphere, but it is large enough to convey the message being sent. The font suggests that this place is a cool place run by young adults. What I can say is that the font is sans serif too.
