How does this letter-form communicate its location?
This sign is stuck at the entrance of the BMX indoor park. It is made from individual metal letters all in caps lock. The sign suggests that the place welcomes young adults who are full of energy as the sign is bold and fresh. After briefly going through the different categories of typefaces, I concluded that the typeface used on this sign is part of the Neo-Grotesque family. Neo-Grotesque typefaces are designed in a simplistic manner, and are the first typeface family with variations of weights and widths (Monotype.). Compared to the Grotesque typeface, the Neo-Grotesque is more refined therefore it lost many of the awkward curves that were common with early sans serifs. According to Allessio, J. (2013) this typeface was popular amongst Modernists and remained popular today. The Modernist era began in the early 1900s and continued until the early 1940s. The sign must have been up at the early 2000s as although the building is quite old, it is in recent times that the premises were taken by the BMX club in Malta.
