How does this letter-form communicate its location?

A nos Morts. A monument carved to forever remember the dead. It is dated 1040 to 1045. I could not find much information on this. Perhaps is was a disaster that killed a majority of the people who inhabited this town. it does not even say when the monument was erected. The type carved into this stone is quite romanesque, with serif tabs on the thing lettering. This could be in order to help distinguish between the letters on the rock as it is started to slowly crumble. The font I believe is aesthetic, and elegant and most likely used to cast a beautiful carving on the sad monument.
