How does this letter-form communicate its location?

This sign placed outside of the railway station clearly shows the LNER initials. From my first impressions this feels too flambouant and extravagant to be a modern design. It has the feel of being part of a station when catching the train was a not a regular thing and only the higher class could afford such a treat.  LNER was the second largest of the for ‘big four’ rail companies in the 1920’s when art deco was in full swing. Buildings, furniture, jewelry and trains were all being influenced by this movement. That’s what this lettertype gives the impression of to me. Berwick station has been built and rebuilt a couple of times. Could this be a replica that was on the station in the 20’s?
