How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Macclesfield’s Technical School which occupied this building in 1900 is now home to the local Wetherspoons pub close to the centre of Macclesfield. The old style serif typeface here is typical of the town with a lot of the signs I have photographed having similar fonts to this, mostly used in their capital form to allow for maximum readability. I love the unusual design of this typeface, I imagine it to have been designed by hand as there are many flourishes which give this text personality and charm. I particularly like the imperfect ‘and’ sign, which seems to be disproportionate on the right hand side. Wetherspoons have mirrored this typeface with their pub name ‘Society Rooms’ which is placed above the original door which ties in nicely the new with the old.
