How does this letter-form communicate its location?

The signage shown above can be found on the iconic Adams Building, a seven-floor former lace mill now home to Nottingham College. It was built in the 1800s at the centre of Nottingham's then world-renowned lace manufacturing industry. The lettering has been carved in stone and painted with gold-leaf or metallic paint. While the typeface is in keeping with decorative serif typefaces of that period, the decorative elements (shown in letters such as the &) proudly celebrate the lace produced there. Nottingham College has carefully maintained the building's original signage, simply adding their own elsewhere.
