How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Getting into the city (Makati) from where I live, I pass by the highway where the offramp to the airport is along the way. The signage uses a sans-serif font—reflectorized white over green—following the international standard giving a clear and straightforward look and feel. What I find specifically interesting about the NAIA design is that it differs slightly from the norm with its use of “X” to represent “Expressway”. Not only did they use an abbreviation but they used an icon. While I am not certain if the signage will register correctly to non-locals, the design is certainly more eye-catching amidst the uniform signages beside it/ across the highway.
