How does this letter-form communicate its location?
This uppercase ‘N’ is one of 13 different sections approximately 4m high that spell ‘John Lewis’ in tiles. The tiles are various shades of brown, therefore it’s no surprise that this design hails from the construction era of the ‘new town project’ in the mid 1970s. These large letterforms are easy to walk past due to their scale and the close proximity of the walkways below. Sadly I’m yet to find confirmation of who designed them – I can only find one other blog post speculating they could be by Lucienne and Robin Day. These walls will be protected as they form part of the ‘Centre MK’, a listed building.
