How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Newcastle Metro opened in 1980, comprises 60 underground and overground stations, serves Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside; and it's used by more than 40 million passengers a year. Similar to London Underground, it utilizes simplistic and clean typographic design across its logos, signage, and livery. The main logo comprises the letter ‘M’ for ‘metro’ using the Calvert font, specifically designed by Margaret Calvert and released by Monotype in 1980. The yellow and black signs are illuminated at night and act like a ‘beam’ to get you home safely at any time of the day. The instant and enduring popularity of the Metro with local people, and visitors, cemented a link between the color yellow and decent local transport.
