How does this letter-form communicate its location?

While walking through Walpole park we found these bronze-like plaques on the ground. The plaques had a tilted Serif type-face which made the information displayed feel very old; but the description of the actual text is written in San Serif, making the plaque feel a lot closer to our time. These plaques make the Walpole park feel older than one might think it is but also make us consider the people who walked through its paths centuries ago. This historical information makes the park feel very grand and makes us realize that people who lived in the past were not that much different than us.
