How does this letter-form communicate its location?

I was really excited when I noticed the ghost sign above a Thorogoods. General Street and the surrounding streets are somewhere I haven't travelled before, and was surprised to see the signage on the building façade. Traditionally, this is away from tourist trade, so the area could have been a local hot-spot, especially with the garage being detailed on the wall. This is also an example of a palimpsest as there's two signs revealed.
