How does this letter-form communicate its location?

This is a replica of one side of one of a Basingstoke Canal Token and is situated in the area which was once the canal wharf, along with the reverse side and an informational plaque. I think the imperfections of the replica add a lot of personality to it, particularly the weathered lettering and edges - which contribute to the historical feeling - as well as the gradually reduced spacing between the letters as you reach the word 'canal'. Assuming the typesetter misjudged the space, the human error element makes the piece feel authentic.
