How does this letter-form communicate its location?
This carved street name is placed high up on a stone made building. During the 19th Century there were only a few roads and streets within the walls of Berwick. College Place was adjacent to one of these. As many of the street names around the town are now in the more standard aluminium or plastic, this carving has stood the test of time and is still in good condition. The name is etched in capitals as legibility is of upmost importance for this subject. It has been carved in a serif font rather than sans serif which is used today. I question why this has never been replaced though. Could the carver, J.M., be important? Was it standard for the stone carver to place their initials next to their work?
