How does this letter-form communicate its location?

T Gorman - I’ve chosen this example of lettering as a classic ghost sign, that gives an insight into Derby’s history and even more specifically the very local history of this building. This ghost sign, worn but still entirely legible and prominent, is a physical reminder of what Derby’s economy previously looked like. For example, the fact that it has ‘Est. Over 50 Years’ on the sign stands out to current residents of the city who are surprised when a shop is able to stay open for more than a couple of years. The sign is situated on the side of the shopfront which can be seen most easily by pedestrians, and I feel would have served well both for wayfinding and as an advert for a trustworthy shoemaker and repairer (thanks to the use of the name - which has been simply highlighted by the use of colour).
