How does this letter-form communicate its location?

These beautiful blue tiles are used as street name signs on many of the roads and alleys around Brixham. They date back to the late 19th Century, and are common in the area, but not so much around the country. I think there is a continental, almost Mediterranean feel to them, which fits in well with our "English Riviera" town. I also like the fact that they are crafted signs, and higher up on the walls than most street signs - they are definitely for pedestrians rather than motorists, which is apt as Brixham is easier to walk around than to drive!
