How does this letter-form communicate its location?
This letterform was caused by the environment and weather conditions. Many of these example of vernacular letterforms, often unseen and unnoticed, subtly contribute to the identity of the town. I particularly like the ‘King.' This is part of the full wording ‘No Parking’. The words were displayed on a gate with plastic vinyl of some description, but over the years have become weather-beaten. It has almost created a new quirky kind of font. “Even when the ‘sign’ is an accident of nature… the human is there in the recording eye…The images require us to dwell on time past and our collective place in it'” – Edward Fella – and this is the often times unnoticed power of vernacular typography.
