How does this letter-form communicate its location?

In the middle of the town centre and surrounded by commercial enterprises the building is important in historical and cultural significance . The austere lettering contrasts with the ornaments surrounding it and the lettering perhaps befits its purpose as a puritanical reform chapel . The difficulties in carving it are evident in the imperfect spacing between the letters and the 'I' of independent not being on the line - all suggesting it was a team of people or perhaps was taken up by different carvers. Thankfully the chapel inside has been maintained and is a Waterstones bookshop - another place for quiet, calm, reflection.
