How does this letter-form communicate its location?

I felt that this sign represented the area really well, it's an old little street and the italic Serif font nicely represents this, Bath place is a tiny old brick walkway with lots of independent shops.  This sign has been here for as long as I can remember and I don't feel as if it's aged much.  Maybe the hand makes me smile more than the font but it is a timeless sign that represents the area well.
