How does this letter-form communicate its location?

I did some research into Lady Jerningham and I found out at she was married to a member of parliment, Sir Hubert Jerningham, and she inherited Longridge Towers, my old school, from her father. The statue itself is carved from white stone and has two cast iron plaques on either side. The description itself is carved into a smooth, set back area. I wonder why they wouldnt use a plaque for the most important detail. Could the cast iron process have been seen as a lower, less valuable trade compared to stone masonary at that time? The font itself seems to be a mixture between both serif and sans serif. There only seems to be a hint of a serif in this typeface. There is a heirachy in this design also. Names are larger and more important.
