How does this letter-form communicate its location?
This is one of the characteristic Munich street signs. They are enamel panels with white lettering on a blue background. The combination of blue and white being used in the capital city of Bavaria is not surprising since those two colours are the identifying colours of Bavaria. This particular design of the signs took hold early on, probably as early as the beginning of the 20th century (Dollinger 2007). Today, most of them have a similar appearance using an Antiqua Typeface which is a type of roman lettering. This example of vernacular type shows the traditional side of Munich, especially with the washed look of the panel.
