How does this letter-form communicate its location?

The Essex Linen Supply has been on Drouillard Road for approximately 56 years and the signage outside is something of a local landmark swinging high above the sidewalk. The clean sans serif font is easy to read and noticeable from a distance. What makes this stand out particularly is the way in which vibrant colour has been added as a ‘logo’ to the left of the image. There is a simplicity to the overall design but it is the colour that speaks to the era in which it was created – the 1960’s.
