How does this letter-form communicate its location?
A public aquarium was discussed in the late 1970s by marine biologists from Stanford University, among others, which operated the nearby Hopkins Marine Station. Initial funds were provided by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in October 1984. Graphic and exhibit designer Richard Graef of Ace Design in Sausalito was asked to design the Aquarium’s logo. His solution featuring a circle of kelp reflects the living kelp forest that is the main exhibit inside the Aquarium and is also right outside in Monterey Bay. The simple sans-serif typeface below the artwork, typical of the 1980s, anchors the artwork and doesn’t compete with it.
