How does this letter-form communicate its location?
Cascadia Glass is a car repair shop located at the base of Mt. Shasta, California. As this is a small mountain town, I found it interesting that they would go through so much work to make such an elaborate storefront sign. The movement of the word “cascade” curves upwards and then slightly down again at the end, perhaps reflecting the same shape as Mt. Shasta, the volcano that looms just over the town where this is located. The font itself is a serif font and looks even more dated with the giant double-story lowercase “g”. The coloring of the letters are also particular because they look very “old western” with the two-color shading. It is a theme I have seen quite a few times living in the west of the U.S. Lastly there is the lovely painting of Mt. Shasta within the bottom half of the “g” really solidifying this as a local artisanal piece. As this is a remote location, it rather makes sense to me that the shop owners would rather have this made locally than imported from far away.
