How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Just two blocks East of Studio Bell, you’ll find the Sentinels of Fort Calgary, on the grounds of the living museum of Fort Calgary. Similar to Studio Bell, I love the marriage of old type and modern type in connecting past with the present. In this case, hand written letters from the 19th century are contrasted with a 21st sans serif font. The colour is to acknowledge the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and their famous uniforms. In Calgary, whenever a new public project is built (bridges, parks, buildings), a small percentage of the budget is set aside to create an original work of art. In this case as part of the redevelopment of the Fort Calgary grounds, the sentinels were created to pay tribute to the importance of the area.
