How does this letter-form communicate its location?

I loved this sign in comparison to much of the other hand painted signage, particularly in contrast to the pieces of type on the side of buildings. Where are those are pristinely kept this piece has been painted with much less skill level and then painted over (the black on the right) to hold another sign over the top and then re-revealed as the new shop with signage moved or folded. Through the blacked out panels you could still make out the letters underneath because of their thick brush strokes and dripped paint, which made for a wonderful textural element, which in turn gives it the hand done element that is missing in printed logos.
