How does this letter-form communicate its location?
The Chelsea in downtown Windsor was built between 1925-26 and constructed in a Renaissance Revival architectural style. In 1990 the building was recognised for its value as a piece of heritage as the first combined YMCA+YWCA in Canada. In 2009, the building was sold, renamed ‘The Chelsea’ and its function repurposed. The name above the door has been added in a manner sympathetic to the building. The blocky, and straight outer edge of each letter in contrast to the roundness of the inner, more circular shapes - especially evident in the counter of the ‘A’. The overarching impression is one of historical grandeur, quite removed from the building’s original design intention.
