How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Streets this area are made up of late 19th - early 20th century terraced town houses and are marked with cast Iron signs of the same period. This sign has a black border with inverted corners and a small hand pointing in the right direction. Some signs utilise this hand motif either on the outer ridge or within the border of the sign. No street signs in this style use an arrow, the hand in this image feels friendly and welcoming. Relief cast serif lettering in black is displayed in the centre of the sign on a bright white background, giving high contrast and clear visibility in its surroundings. They are functional yet decorative without detriment to its purpose.
