How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Made from metal on a steel framed base to mount the letters. I like the half tube almost metalwork which adds to the aesthetics of the typography itself. The missing letters gives a sense of industrial era history to the area, albeit it is slightly more modern although not far off of industrial times in the uk. This being made and established in 1882, and still running today. Which at first glance it looked like they had stopped operating many years ago. The sign has much history and familiar association to some of the locals to it and I believe this is why they have not refurbished it.
