How does this letter-form communicate its location?
Gray has been synonymous with fashion and style for over a decade. Paint manufacturer Farrow & Ball sell 24 shades of grey to aspirational homeowners with names like Manor House and Charleston Gray. Charleston was home Vanessa Bell, sister of Virgina Woolf. They belonged to the Bloomsbury set, a group of radical artists and writers in 1920’s. This numeral adorns the cornice of SVG (Stroud Valleys Gallery). It’s an art gallery, workshop space and café. This clean white san serif numeral set on gray represents the town’s slow gentrification. It’s a shabby town set at the centre of five beautiful valleys. One of which is Slad, which was home to the writer Laurie Lee. Damien Hurst has several large studios dotted around the area. Art and crafts are very much at the heart of this town.
