How does this letter-form communicate its location?

The "Trafalcar Hotel" sign, It is huge and basic. What I found interesting was how it looks like it had been made. The use of possibly plaster or a concrete to create an embossed base and the typography is de-bossed. The earliest I can find any data about the hotel is circa 1881 so over 100 years old made in the Georgian times. It's a relic of the past showing the area when it was populated with hotels and pubs as a travel destination. These signs where produced in a large scale to show off and gain custom.
