How does this letter-form communicate its location?

London is a very intense city: it is packed with people who lead very busy lives for which they often need to commute. I noticed that compared to cities in Sweden, London travel is much more common and accessible and because of the high amount of stops each stops needs to very clearly state which way it's going, what buses stop there and also the two letters which differentiate the two stops on either side of the road. These bus stops use the same letters and colours as the metro, most likely in order to continue building the identity of the London public transport. I believe that if the signs weren't as recognizable and informative the public transport would be a lot more confusing, and finding the correct stops would be much more time consuming.
