How does this letter-form communicate its location?

While most of the signs looked quite fresh and clean in Ealing, on the way back we found these two signs on the same brick wall. Both are made of the same metallic material and seem to have had the same shape before the older one rusted over. The older sign was a lot thicker and squished together, while the newer one had a thinner and longer look which looks a lot more elegant and clean. It's interesting, as the new signs gives off a very different vibe from the older one, yet they kept the old sign right next to the new one. I am unsure if it was just laziness or if they thought it gave off a nostalgic feeling when comparing the two signs.
