How does this letter-form communicate its location?

I don’t recall seeing street signs like this, though I’m sure some in this style and typeface probably exist somewhere. To me, though, they suggest a certain personality, and indeed, the lettering is actually quite similar to the Elephant’s lettering (see below). On one hand, I don’t think it’s actually the most readable type that could be chosen for street signs – on the other, there is a certain flare and flamboyancy that is befitting of Faversham. In a world full of bland street signs and simple typefaces, it is a delight to see something with a spark in my town.
