How does this letter-form communicate its location?
This was scrawled onto the wall of an old building in the park where I live. In society, graffiti has always been used to convey a message, with artists like Banksy using it to call out socio-economic issues. In Pretoria and Johannesburg, graffiti abounds, and is usually created by South Africa’s black and mixed-race ethnic group, used to voice their displeasure and rebel against society in their own way. While some of these messages are quite poignant, others seem to be the product of boredom- defacing simply because they can. In a quiet area like Meyerspark, acting out and drawing vulgar imagery and messaging is a way to alleviate boredom, no more, no less.
