How does this letter-form communicate its location?

I have recently moved to South Spain / Andalusia, from Brighton, UK. I am familiar with rust, which is everywhere in a costal city that also has a wet UK climate. What interested me about these letters in Southern Spain, is the rust is created by sun burning instead. The sun has stripped away at the outer later and is eroding the metal. You see it a lot on car roofs, which are left outside. The 'private land' sign has an outsider quality about it and I really like how the stencil type work horizontally, instead of the vertical cut typically used in stencil letters.
