How does this letter-form communicate its location?
Hackney Empire is a theatre located in the heart of Hackney Central. The old building (seen on the right of this picture) was built in 1901, with a refurbishment and extension built in 2005. The refurbishment of Hackney Empire symbolises the regeneration of Hackney Central after years of struggling with high crime rates. The modern, sans serif letterforms are a stark juxtaposition to the more elaborate, ornamental lettering seen on the old Hackney Empire building and the signage of the surrounding area. The decision to create these letterforms out of concrete (or a concrete-style material) creates an aura of permanence, confidence and clarity. The lack of ornamentation combined with its huge scale allows the simple letterforms to become a statement in itself. It serves the dual purpose of advertising the building and promoting the area's regeneration at the same time. It signifies a step forward for Hackney, towards modernity and away from its slightly painful past.
