How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Hand painted, bevelled letters of the sign “Beer Garden”, located next to main building, above the entrance to the back garden, invokes the traditional and modern. Established in 1857 “The Rose” is a modern British Pub just across the road from New Cross Gate station. One of many pubs surrounding Goldsmiths college it preserved the atmosphere of traditional old pub, and simultaneously successfully combined it with contemporary, urban vibe, appealing to the younger customers. It is expressed in a variety of typographical styles and technique used in its branding (handwriting and prints inside, historical sign outside etc.).
