How does this letter-form communicate its location?

One of my favourite finds was Mark’s & Spencers which maintains its old sign, despite its new sign taking its place. The older sign looks carved into the stone, and the overarching serifs on both the A and N show a quirkier side to the brands more recent, elegent approach to their type choice.  Keeping their old sign continues the trend in Bury, and builds an identity of the town which wants to maintain and showcase its past. Most interestingly, is that the ‘new’ sign is still an older version of the Marks & Spencer brand. It seems the town simply doesn’t need to modernise!
