How does this letter-form communicate its location?

Either side of this sign is ‘amusements’ in a different font, but the reason I picked the main ‘GOLDENGATE’ was the repeated curvature that can be seen in each letter. The sign itself is very angular, with limited spacing. The letters ‘D’, ‘E’ and ‘A’ expand beyond their parameters. Lit up at night the bold red and lights are typically seen in seaside amusement arcades and a strong part of their vernacular identity.
