How does this letter-form communicate its location?

McSorley's Old Ale House, established in 1874, holds the title for 'oldest Irish saloon in New York City'. The official mottos of the bar are "Be Good or Be Gone", and "We were here before you were born". Prior to 1970, when it was a 'men's only' establishment, their motto was "Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies". I think the signage reflects exactly what you can expect to see on the inside of he bar, as it is hand-drawn, far from perfect, unique, and attempts to vaguely mirror it's Celtic counterparts (while seen through the lens of a gruff, NYC long-time establishment). Much like their beer selection (light or dark), the sign is no-frills and effective.
