How does this letter-form communicate its location?
The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove has supplied, at no cost, more than 700 “historic home plaques” that are placed on the front of qualifying old houses since 1978. The houses are required to have been built before 1926 and “retain their original character and architectural style.” The plaque design and lettering (PG is known as “The Butterfly Town”) is frankly not award-winning, but they are easily noticed and very readable, they supply interesting information—the name of the first owner and the date built—to both tourists and locals alike, and they don’t compete with the esthetics of the houses themselves.
