How does this letter-form communicate its location?

This gem of a sign was a recent find. It used to be covered over by an ugly plastic monstrosity advertising Gresham Hotel a few paces from Nottingham Train Station. The hotel is no longer there, but this beautiful stained-glass signage remains! A sans-serif typeface has been used with art-nouveau overtures. I haven't uncovered much about this building's history, but an educated guess is that it was the original hotel signage.
