How does this letter-form communicate its location?
After doing a little digging into the the ‘Good Templar Hall’ I found out that this organisation were an international company that promoted temperance. With the town being on the border between England and Scotland, alcohol consumption was quite high, especially with Scots coming down on a Sunday, as Scotland took a stricter approach to pubs being opened on that day. The original sign continues to stay in good condition due to it being made from cast iron. A serif font has been used which goes inline with the type faces that were around at that time. I would say there is a lot of white space around the wording itself. If this sign was to be created today you would either make the wording larger or the sign itself smaller. Could there have been a production reason to this? Is this why it is shaped in a circle rather than a rectangle?
